It is a buildup of moisture, secretions and skin cells around the shaft of the penis. It is much more common under the foreskin if uncircumcised.
The area under the foreskin normally needs this lubrication. When too much smegma builds up, because you sweat a lot or don't wash your penis regularly, it can create smelly white lumps that can breed bacteria.
If left untreated, your penis can become inflamed or infected.
To clean smegma from your penis :
- Pull back (retract) the foreskin.
- Wash your penis with water and mild soap ( Incredy BooLs works great!)
- Rinse the penis.
- Pat it dry. Do not rub.
- Once the smegma has been cleaned, put the foreskin back on the penis.
Once the smegma has been washed away, the odor should disappear. Repeat these steps once a day if smegma persists.
Contact your doctor if you notice the following symptoms:
- redness
- swelling
- irritation
- the foreskin will not come back
