“The important thing is to wash yourself”. No, or rather, not exactly! Daily intimate hygiene remains the best way to prevent infections, irritation and bad odors, but only if correct and not excessive.
It is good to know that washing too often can still lead to irritation of the genital area, since the skin is very thin and therefore more sensitive to rubbing and also to the chemical substances present in many intimate cleansers. For this reason, in our opinion, the best compromise is to use the bidet once or twice a day: he will not miss you and you will always be clean and perfumed.
Another point on which greater attention and awareness is needed is that of pH: let's see together what it is, what the differences in pH are between men and women and why it is appropriate to respect it.
What is pH?
The acronym pH indicates a scale of values with which the degree of acidity of the skin is measured: on average, the pH of our skin is around 5.5 and, therefore, is considered acidic , as it is lower than 7. This slightly acidic pH is created by the acid mantle of the skin, or the aqueous part that protects the external layers of the skin.
The acid mantle that covers the skin is primarily responsible for maintaining its balance, forming a skin protection. It neutralizes aggressive substances, inhibits bacterial proliferation and restores and maintains the ideal acid environment in which the skin's natural flora can form .
Men and women: differences in intimate pH
The pH can reach different levels of acidity, depending on age, sex and the part of the body we are going to observe; the intimate area deserves a special analysis, the one that perhaps presents the greatest differences between men and women. In fact, if on the one hand we have a pH of about 5.5 , on the other we have one that is around 3.5.
Obviously, it is highly discouraged to use shower gels and shampoos for body cleansing, which certainly have an alkaline pH and are rich in aggressive surfactants. Consequently, it is necessary to consider products dedicated to intimate hygiene , so as not to alter the pH and not encounter unpleasant consequences.
Altered pH: What are the symptoms?
If we do not take care of it, our skin could lose this acid mantle and the weakening of the epidermis (the outermost layer) would lead to three main symptoms such as:
- dry skin
- redness
- inflammation
- hypersensitive skin
How to respect the pH?
As we have already seen, pH is one of the most effective mechanisms that allow the skin to protect our body from external agents and altering it can cause discomfort, which however are easily preventable by observing some precautions.
Here are the most common causes that lead to pH damage:
- Dirt
- Excessive intimate hygiene
- Humidity and temperature changes
- Chemical agents
The latter, in particular, overload the skin's natural neutralization capacity, damage the cell structure and ruin the protective barrier .
Our advice, therefore, is to wash the genital area with a product dedicated to men, which respects the pH of 5.5 , twice a day and after each sexual intercourse. Even better if organic , so as to avoid the presence of overly aggressive chemical substances!
